I definitely thought this was a new product for Sony intended to look vintage-modern—sleek, clean, beautiful, with some vintage styling. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. I mean, I was looking for a price tag to see if I could snatch one of these guys. That’s when I discovered the TR-1825 radio was actually made in 1970. It’s amazing that something can look this good and relevant today.

Video of the Week: Saul Bass Pitches the New Bell System Logo (1968)

I always love seeing into the brain of a designer for a branding, especially for iconic logos. This is Saul Bass’ pitch video for the amazing 1969 Bell Telephone rebranding. Everything is explained, including what the old logo stood for and why it didn’t work in the new, post-war USA. This is definitely inspirational and a must watch. It is 26 minutes long, but it’s worth it. Pop some popcorn and watch it, kids.

There’s been a lot of amazing galleries this year, and the Pharma exhibition at the Herb Lubalin Study Center is definitely at the top of that list. It features advertisements for the big pharmaceutical companies that emerged in the middle of last century, often using shocking and bold imagery to make their point. It worked, and I can see why.

(So, who wants to go with me to New York to see this exhibition?)

As someone said in the comments: I really just want to hold this in my hands. This is not something that can be taken in fully on a screen, no matter how clearly it’s photographed and no matter how large the picture is.

This gorgeous poster is for the Greenwood Space Travel Supply Company, which, yes, is another one of those companies that donates their profits to 826, an organization which tutors youngsters in reading and writing. You’ve seen products for the organization before; the stuff sold for 826 are cute, well-designed, gimmicky products with pirate or superhero themes. We now dive into space with this absolutely incredible poster, complete with nostalgic advertisements like “How to Build Your Own Black Hole Kit.”

Purchase the Spencer Charles designed piece for $12 here.

(Yes, I did post this today because a big chunk of metal out in space is supposed to be re-entering our atmosphere. I like my posts to be related to what’s happening in the world, all right?)

Video of the Week: Classic Herman Miller commercials

I live in West Michigan, an area dubbed as the Furniture Capital of the World. One those furniture companies is a company called Herman Miller. I am exposed to Herman Miller often as the city is saturated in the company’s furniture, the roadways are littered with their semis and many events bear the company’s name and logo in sponsorship.

But I’ve never seen these television ads before. They’re peculiar and unexpected with one ad centering around the Herman Miller Man as a cowboy (not the normal target market, I’d imagine) and another showing a man being shot in the chest. Some people think these were never released or were even done for inside the company only, but they are definitely worth a watch!
