Designer of the Week: Michiel Schuurman

While all amazing, the first poster in the set is super rad. Incredible.

This painted aesthetic is pretty rare in design these days, but it’s refreshing…especially since it fits the restaurant so well.

There’s been a lot of amazing galleries this year, and the Pharma exhibition at the Herb Lubalin Study Center is definitely at the top of that list. It features advertisements for the big pharmaceutical companies that emerged in the middle of last century, often using shocking and bold imagery to make their point. It worked, and I can see why.

(So, who wants to go with me to New York to see this exhibition?)

Video of the Week: Punga’s advertisement for FOX Retro

While we’re on the topic of awesome 80s pixelated graphics, how about a nice commercial for FOX’s home for TV shows from decades past?

As someone said in the comments: I really just want to hold this in my hands. This is not something that can be taken in fully on a screen, no matter how clearly it’s photographed and no matter how large the picture is.

This gorgeous poster is for the Greenwood Space Travel Supply Company, which, yes, is another one of those companies that donates their profits to 826, an organization which tutors youngsters in reading and writing. You’ve seen products for the organization before; the stuff sold for 826 are cute, well-designed, gimmicky products with pirate or superhero themes. We now dive into space with this absolutely incredible poster, complete with nostalgic advertisements like “How to Build Your Own Black Hole Kit.”

Purchase the Spencer Charles designed piece for $12 here.

(Yes, I did post this today because a big chunk of metal out in space is supposed to be re-entering our atmosphere. I like my posts to be related to what’s happening in the world, all right?)

I think it’s kinda funny that I’m writing this post as I’m watching Pink Panther cartoons from the 60s because the style of Lisa Schneller’s made-up villain convention is very reminiscent of some of the cartoons from that period. It’s probably intentional because that’s when the sly, mustache-twirling villain had his heyday. It’s appropriate. It’s wonderfully done. I’m not complaining….neither would Mr. Panther.

Illustrator of the Week: Etienne Chaize

For someone who spent the first two years of the 80s-in-the-2000s fashion trend speaking outwardly of how horrible most the fashion and art was, I turned out liking the aesthetics of the neon-and-pixel era an awful lot (I blame science fiction for the change of heart). Etienne Chaize is seriously the best “80s futuristic chrome” artist I’ve ever seen, and it probably has to do with the fact that she steps away from the computer for a good part of her designs (including the coloring!). There’s something to be said for handmade, huh?

This stationery system for Guild first caught my eye because of the wonderful copper metallic ink (hey, copper is my flavor-of-the-week). However, everything else of this system is just gorgeous: the mark, the placement, the continuity between all of the pieces…it’s just all so golden (or should I say: copper).
