THE EM SPACE

Design features and news from all over the design spectrum.

At first look, these advertisements look like beautifully lit, spacious, bare rooms. Upon second glance, you realize these definitely are not rooms. In fact, they look like they could be the inside of violins, trumpets, organs…

Then you realize they are indeed photos from the inside of instruments.

Isn’t this breathtaking? When I first saw the photos my jaw dropped.

My jaw about hit the desk when I realized this wasn’t some sort of crystalline cavern. It was the inside of a plastic bag. It’s amazing how something so ordinary can be so beautiful.

Living in the city that houses the world’s largest art competition, you see a lot of large scale mosiacs made with uncommon materials like legos, pushpins and wine corks…but this probably the coolest. Rubiks cubes! This is made with RUBIKS CUBES!

Video of the Week: Tony Orrico’s “Penwald: 12: Prone to Stand”

Some of the best pieces of work have come from artists who were emotionally drained and lacking sleep. Exhaustion can make a mind do crazy things. In this case, pushing ones self to the limits while making art can create something beautiful, too. Tony Orrico will work for hours without a break, creating art in silence except for the rhythmic noise of his utensils. What makes him different, though, is that he creates beautiful, enormous geometric art by kneeling or laying and moving across the canvas or testing his brain by creating large scale symmetrical graphics with just his hands. Because of his technique, Orrico has been dubbed The Human Spirograph. I couldn’t think of a more fitting title.

This work is so amazing that I must insist that after you finish this video, you view the rest of them Orrico’s site.

I know just the place I’d wear this! This Crystal Method “Divided by Night” shirt actually responds to sounds, so it’d probably be the best club shirt ever.

This is one of those things that make you stop and say “Whoa.” out loud.

Your eyes are not deceiving you. The bookshelves are the floor, the couches are on their sides and the ceiling lamps defy gravity.

It’ll be an expensive brand identity, but D’Espresso in Manhattan could have something very cool in store should they branch out. I know that even if they don’t, I’ll be hitting this place up next time I hit the Big Apple.
