In what could be one of the greatest magazine stories of 2011, graphic designer David Carson is going back to his roots with a new magazine in his own namesake. Being the experimental typographer we know him to be, this will probably a wonderfully different spin on magazines of late. I know I’m definitely considering a subscription.

A magazine produced today that genuinely looks like it was produced in the mid 20th century? Nothing but love.

Playboy Magazine Conceptual Redesign - FormFiftyFive →

- February 23 -

Not only do I think this is a great conceptual redesign, but I think the company desperately needs it. They need something to make them stand out and give the people something they can’t get for “free on the internet” (that’s the biggest reason I’m hearing for Playboy’s decline in sales). This is gorgeous and a total talking piece.

I would even buy it for the articles…I mean, design.

I Spy Tuesdays: Revue Magazine

At the beginning of every month in West Michigan, stacks of nearly square newsprint magazines arrive at local businesses. It’s something those in West Michigan have come to expect. They’ve also come to expect that these magazines will disappear within a couple days, tops. If you don’t pick up one quickly, then you’re just out of luck. This magazine’s name is Revue.

Revue is an entertainment lover’s paradise, chock full of interviews from local and national talent in all arts, reviews of the greatest up-and-coming works, and insight into local shops, venues, and restaurants.

Putting content aside, it’s got a pretty nice design. Great typography, illustrations and photographs from local talent, and from my own experience: some nice editorial designing. I worked for my alma mater’s newspaper for four years, being an editor and design guide for three of those four. Revue makes me yearn for those days again; it truly is a different experience, designing for an editorial.

Oh, and their website isn’t so bad, either. :)

I love old school Esquire covers. That’s all I gotta say about this. It’s all that needs to be said.
